On every October 16, the world celebrates the World Food Day. The day is celebrated to commemorate the founding date of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945.
Yesterday was the 73rd anniversary of FAO’s founding. Across the world, several events were held to mark the day. This year’s theme is Zero Hunger by 2030. The main priorities of the theme are Don’t Waste Food, Produce More With Less, Adopt A More Healthy And Sustainable Diet And Advocate For Zero Hunger.
The State of Qatar, as in all great causes for the welfare of the human kind, celebrated the World Food Day in its all glory. The Ministry of Municipality and Environment celebrated the Day by organising a number of events in order to send awareness messages and guidance on the importance of food and methods to combat hunger.
On this occasion, Minister of Environment and Municipality H E Mohamed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi said that Qatar’s celebration of World Food Day is an affirmation of the importance of food and the necessity of providing it to every individual in line with the interest of the wise leadership in developing resources and wealth especially in agriculture, towards achieving self-sufficiency in many of these commodities and products, pointing out that Qatar has harnessed all its energies to work towards building food security.
In this context, the agricultural sector in the State of Qatar, under the directives of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, is of great importance as the sector entrusted with achieving food security and as one of the most important priorities of the State in the short, medium and long term.
The Minister added that the theme of this year’s celebration is to raise public awareness of the problem of hunger and to highlight the suffering of the hungry people in the world.
The Minister noted that at the local level, the Ministry has an important responsibility for food security and natural resource development to increase production and increase self-sufficiency. It adopted plans and strategies based on increasing the production of agricultural commodities in the country such as vegetables, red meat, poultry, eggs and fish.
According to UN agencies, the number of hungry people in the world reached 821 million this year. As FAO says, everyone has a role to play in achieving Zero Hunger, but countries, institutions and people need to work together to reach this goal.
