Quest for peace

Security and peace are a pre-requisite to prosperity and wellbeing. It is because of this sole reason Qatar always voices for a binding regional security agreement in the Middle East and the need for cooperation to address collective threats.

Even during the panel discussion in the 56th Munich Security Conference on de-escalation in the Gulf region, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, reiterated the call of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for joint efforts to put an end to conflicts in the region.

His Excellency said that crises in the Middle East were interconnected and require comprehensive solutions. H E the Deputy Prime Minister then expressed Qatar’s belief that peace and stability will be restored only when the region's countries agree to work together to reach consensus on key challenges, with regional players determining security-related affairs, and stressed that security will be a pre-requisite to prosperity.

Qatar voicing for peace in an international platform is not an isolated incident or something new as the country does not spare any chance to address regional instability.

Two years ago at this same podium, H H the Amir had shed light on the critical challenges happening in the Middle East and called for collective action to solve them. His Highness had also opined that everyone can agree that the Middle East desperately needs sustainable regional security agreements to ensure long-term stability.

When we take into account the developments in the region, Qatar is the ideal choice to lead a peace initiative. It should also be noted that Qatar has been ranked one of the safest countries in the world despite being located in a geographically turbulent region.

Qatar deserves high appreciation for keeping a great vision on peace and working hard for its establishment. According to Qatar, a successful Middle East accord for peace needs to be collective, binding, based on agreed principles of security, developed with rules of governance, dispute resolution and accountability, respectful of sovereignty and equality among its members, and a commitment to non-interference in internal affairs.

Qatar also believes that the mission to achieve peace should not be a unilateral effort. Qatar calls for each nation in the Middle East to come together in good faith to create a structured framework where all states will be held accountable for achieving peace and sustaining security.
