Qatar again through a new contribution of $100 million to alleviate the sufferings of war-stricken Syrian people has demonstrated its mature, responsible and generous role which the country is playing at the global level.

As Qatar is engaged in active and constructive diplomacy to bring eight-year old Syrian conflict to an end, its wise and generous leadership is extending full support to mitigate the constant pain and suffering of millions of war-affected Syrians either they are living inside Syria or taking shelter in refugee camps in neighbouring countries.

In a statement in Brussels conference on ‘Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region’ the other day, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani affirmed that Qatar fulfilled all its commitments during the political consultations and donor conferences, and supported the needs of the Syrian people since the outbreak of the crisis and over eight years, by granting about $2bn, in coordination with its partners from donor countries and specialised international agencies.

H E the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs said that Qatar is a reliable partner and will spare no effort to provide all support and assistance to Syrian people, in coordination with its international partners and in accordance with international law.

The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that alleviating the suffering of the Syrians requires the international community to fulfil its humanitarian obligations and provide the necessary assistance and take effective measures to ensure the implementation of Security Council resolution 2165 on facilitating and providing humanitarian access to all affected areas in Syria and to Syrian refugees in host countries.

In a related development, Qatar Fund For Development (QFFD) signed last month a grant agreement with Qatar Charity (QC) to address the humanitarian situation of Syrians within their country and in Lebanon in 2019. The pact came as part of the $50mn grant allocated to support the Syrian people. The agreement, worth around QR18m included three projects, benefiting nearly 108,500 people and 5,000 families.

It is pertinent to mention that under the directives of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Qatar had cancelled State’s National Day celebrations on December18, 2016 in solidarity with the people of Aleppo who were subjected to the most extreme forms of repression, displacement and genocide at the time. A huge donations campaign had been organized in Qatar, collecting about $330m which led to Qatar’s receiving of a letter of thanks from the United Nations.
