Qatar has always played crucial role in promoting peace and it has won praise from world over for its efforts in this direction. This time the country’s efforts in Sudan are being lauded.
Sudanese officials have appreciated the role played by Qatar in achieving peace in Darfur through the Doha Peace Document, especially in the areas of social life, the process of recovery and rehabilitation of the Darfur communities.
Sudan’s Minister of Environment, Natural Resources and Urban Development, Hassan Abdul Qader Hilal, said yesterday that the peace process in Darfur and the progress achieved by the Doha Peace Document in security, has enabled the Ministry to implement green environment projects in Darfur.
The project is aimed at restoring vegetation in the region which was affected by war and conflict.
He said Sudan highly appreciates the Qatari development movement in Darfur and looks forward to many additional roles for the Qatar Fund for Development and the Qatari organisations.
Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir had launched a development project for Darfur under the name of the Green Future of Darfur last March and said the proposed project would transform Darfur into a green zone.
The Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) was finalised at the All Darfur Stakeholders Conference in May 2011, in Doha.
On July 14, 2012, the Government of Sudan and the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) signed a protocol agreement committing themselves to the Document, which is now the framework for the comprehensive peace process in Darfur.
The DDPD is the culmination of over 20 months of negotiations, dialogue and consultations with the major parties to the Darfur conflict, all relevant stakeholders and international partners.
Qatar is promoting peace in Sudan by playing a key role through several initiatives.
On June 3, Qatar Fund For Development (QFFD) with Qatar Charity (QC) and International Centre for Sports Security (ICSS), had launched an initiative to promote peace and development through sport for internally displaced people (IDPs) in Darfur, Sudan, under the title “Sport for Peace and Development”.
The new initiative comes within the framework of the Doha peace document for Darfur in western Sudan and within the ‘Save the Dream’ initiative.
The initiative was implemented with the participation of Save the Dream’s key partners such as Qatar Olympic Committee, Qatar Football Association, Aspire Academy, Qatar Stars League and Al Jazeera Center for Human Rights.
Qatar’s efforts will encourage other countries to play active role in promoting peace.
