Since the civil war officially began in Syria on March 15, 2011, families have suffered heavily under brutal conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands of people, torn a beautiful nation apart and set back the standard of living by decades. The Syrian refugee crisis has become the largest refugee and displacement crisis of the modern world.
Qatar has been extending a helping hand to refugees and people displaced by conflicts and natural calamities across the world and in the Syrian refugee crisis also Qatar is doing more than what other countries or entities are doing. The country has not only extended financial and material aid to the suffering Syrians, but also has been advocating for the rights and protection of the people affected by the crisis by raising the issue at regional or international forums.
Qatar strongly condemned the failure of the Syrian authorities in allowing the Independent International Commission of Inquiry of the Syrian Arab Republic to enter the country in order to carry out its mandate. The Deputy Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN in Geneva, H E Abdullah Hamad Al Nuaimi, during a dialogue with the Independent International Commission of Inquiry, as part of the agenda of the 43rd session of the Human Rights Council, said: “As we enter the 10th year of the Syrian crisis, we are listening today to another report of the commission of inquiry that reveals to us the magnitude of grave violations and heinous crimes committed against the Syrian people. We express our condemnation and concern about the continuing deterioration of the human rights and humanitarian conditions of the Syrian people referred to in the report, the absence of any horizon for a political solution and the insistence of the Syrian regime and its allies on the military solution and the politics of the scorched earth”.
Since the refugee crisis began, Qatar has been consistently giving aid to the refugees inside Syria and the neighbouring countries through different agencies and Ministries. Recently H H the Amir donated QR50m to ‘Shams Deserves’ campaign. It was launched in partnership with the Qatar Media Corporation. The campaign will provide food, health, shelter, water and sanitation supplies to Syrians who fled their homes in the largest wave of displacement since the war began. During the winter, the state has sent tents, blankets, heaters and other supplies to help them weather the harsh living conditions.
Qatar is concerned about the plight of the ordinary people, irrespective of their religion, race, colour or region, who just happened to be the victims of wars and conflicts.
