Stage set for greatest Asian Cup

Qatar, the reigning champions, will be hosting and defending their title at the 18th AFC Asian Cup, kicking off on Friday. After having successfully organized the prestigious FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 just a year ago, Doha is leaving no stone unturned in its preparations for the football extravaganza. Most of the teams have landed in Doha and have started preparing for the topmost tournament of the continent.

In recognition of Qatar’s readiness Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said “I am confident that the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023 will be remembered as Asian football’s finest hour.”

Qatar staged one of the biggest spectacles ever seen in the world, World Cup, which was highly appreciated by the players and fans. The country already has the sporting and hospitality infrastructure required to host the tournament. Qatar boasts magnificent stadiums, most of which were used for the World Cup and have undergone further enhancements for the Asian Cup offering cutting-edge technology and comfort.

The transportation network is already in place and the Doha Metro, which played a huge role in transporting fans during the World Cup, seamlessly connects stadiums and key areas, ensuring smooth movement. Additionally, an extensive network of buses and taxis guarantees convenient transportation options.

Beyond the on-field action, Qatar has lined up a vibrant cultural programme showcasing its rich heritage and traditions. Visitors can experience traditional souqs, museums, art exhibitions, and desert adventures. A variety of live music performances and cultural shows are planned throughout the tournament, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Katara has announced a month-long celebration featuring a diverse array of 46 events from January 12 to February 10. Scheduled at various locations within Katara, the programmes include artistic performances, interactive experiences, and other events.

Lusail Boulevard will also join the festivities with Hello Asia! which will begin on January 10 and will continue till February 10. Parades, vibrant markets, ethnic cuisines, and folklore performances await the visitors. The Boulevard will also feature ‘Country Zones’ along the 1.3-km stretch.

As the first match kicks off at the iconic Lusail Stadium on January 12, the much-appreciated fan zones will also be back at the stadiums and will include live shows, gaming areas as well as food and beverage trucks. Fans can also interact with the mascot family of Saboog, Tmbki, Freha, Zkriti and Traeneh, who will make special appearances.

Qatar is all set to offer a thrilling football tournament coupled with an unforgettable cultural experience.
