Qatar is rapidly marching towards the forefront of countries credited with best records of human rights and living standards their people enjoy. Time and again Qatar has affirmed its commitment to the protection of rights and freedom for all residents in accordance with international best standards.
Recently, Qatar marked the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. The Ministry of Interior, the International Labour Organisation Office in Doha, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and the US embassy participated in an event to mark the day organised by the National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking.
During the event, Najat Al Abdullah, the Director of the Department of Family Affairs at the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labor and Social Affairs, said: “Qatar contributes to the efforts of international community for promoting and protecting the rights of children and women with provision of security, development and basic services in various fields.”
The day was observed to highlight the importance of combating human trafficking, which has become a global phenomenon putting the life of hundreds of people at risk.
At the event, the National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking revealed its plan to conduct an awareness campaign among the workers to educate them about their rights and laws against human trafficking.
Dr. Khalifa Al Abdullah, a member of the committee and representative of Public Prosecution, said: “The National Committee for Combating Human Trafficking will conduct an awareness campaign to advise and guide workers at various workplaces and labor camps to educate them about the laws against human trafficking.”
The campaign will take place in collaboration with the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labor and Social Affairs and the Ministry of Interior.
The committee has been relentless in spreading awareness about human trafficking through distributing brochures, organising seminars, symposiums and holding several other educative events.
Protecting the rights of the residents is of paramount priority for the leadership of Qatar. The country has been taking every step possible to ensure the rights of its people, especially tens of thousands of its expatriate work force.
A visit to any of the hundreds of work sites across the country will open the eyes of the detractors, who want to portray a malicious picture of Qatar. Qatar treats its expatriate workers as guests of the country and provides them with all amenities, whether it is comfortable accommodation, healthcare, food or entertainment facilities.
The country’s laws and regulations ensure no worker is cheated by the employer, they are paid their salaries on time and they are not exploited. No wonder, Qatar has emerged as a model for other countries to follow.
