Ashghal’s smart irrigation project cuts water use by 25%

Doha, Qatar: The Public Works Authority (Ashghal), in cooperation with Al Khor and Al Dhakira Municipality, has successfully implemented a smart irrigation project at Al Tawasul Park and Al Khor Municipality Park, achieving a 25 percent reduction in irrigation water consumption while enhancing the efficient use of treated sewage effluent (TSE).

The initiative forms part of Ashghal’s efforts to adopt smart technologies in landscape irrigation and support sustainable water resource management. 

The project utilizes advanced moisture sensors and intelligent control systems to monitor soil conditions and regulate irrigation according to actual plant requirements, ensuring the optimal use of treated water.

According to Ashghal, the smart irrigation system has significantly improved irrigation efficiency compared to conventional methods, reducing unnecessary water consumption and lowering operational costs. The automated system also minimises water losses and wastage while reducing the demand for treated water used in irrigation.

The project has delivered several operational benefits, including increased operational efficiency, reduced maintenance time and costs, extended the lifespan of irrigation assets, and improved service quality. It also provides a digital platform that supports the future expansion of smart infrastructure and digital transformation initiatives.

Ashghal highlighted the environmental impact of the project, noting that lower water consumption contributes to reducing both water and carbon footprints. The system also decreases the operating hours of pumping equipment, leading to lower energy consumption and further enhancing environmental sustainability.

The authority said the initiative demonstrates the effectiveness of integrating digital technologies into public infrastructure projects to improve resource efficiency and operational performance. By optimising the use of treated sewage effluent for irrigation, the project supports Qatar’s broader sustainability agenda while promoting the responsible management of water resources.
