Qatar Petroleum honoured over 280 executive, senior and mid-level leaders for completing its first signature leadership program.

The event, held under the patronage of H E Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs, the President and CEO of Qatar Petroleum, was the highlight of an unprecedented Qatar petroleum investment in its current leaders, which included initiating programs targeting the executive, senior, mid-level and front line leaders respectively.

The leadership programs were cascaded, starting with the executive team and finishing with frontline leaders. A further 460 frontline leaders will complete their program at the end of 2019.

Addressing QP leaders, Al Kaabi highlighted the importance of leadership in achieving Qatar Petroleum’s vision of becoming one of the best national oil and gas companies in the world.

Al Kaabi said “When the decision was taken to reorganize Qatar Petroleum, our first attention was to transforming people before anything else. We had some of the best talents in the business, and we wanted them to be even better. We worked to transform our culture and drive our performance levels higher. Most importantly, we invested in our leaders.”

The Minister added: “Leadership is the single most important element of success for any organization. It is not just about making the right decisions, but also about communicating with your teams and inspiring them to help drive greater results. For us in Qatar Petroleum, we have made a strategically important investment in our leaders to ensure that people development remains a core business that drives our growth strategy.”

The President and CEO of Qatar Petroleum thanked all QP leaders for their commitment during the one-year program. He also thanked Insead, Cranfield and Mercuri Urval, who have collaborated with Qatar Petroleum to design and implement this signature program.

Also speaking at the recognition ceremony, Executive Vice President of Human Capital Abdulaziz Al Mannai said, “We recognize that our ambitious international growth strategy places greater demands on QP leaders and employees. This is why our leaders must collaborate and work in new ways to reach new goals, and to drive our strategic priorities, champion change, inspire and develop the next generations of leaders and professionals.”

Each of the leadership programs, which are mandatory and inclusive of all QP leaders, was customized to Qatar Petroleum and co-designed in a partnership between QP’s Leadership Development Unit and top business schools. Following the precedent set by QP’s High Performing Boards Program in 2016, leaders from subsidiaries and key national organizations were invited to attend the Senior Leaders Program.

Qatar Petroleum is planning more programs and different types of leadership development for 2019 and 2020 to address emerging priorities and needs.
