Producer Price Index dips by 17.7% in September

Doha: Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) has released the Monthly Producer Price Index (PPI) of the Industrial sector for September, 2019. The PPI for September,2019 is estimated at 61.4 points showing an increase by 0.5 percent, when compared to the previous month’s August, 2019. On Y-o-Y basis, PPI of September, 2019 showed a decrease of 17.7 percent when compared to the PPI of September, 2018.

Producer price index covers goods relating to “Mining” (weight: 72.7 percent), “Manufacturing” (weight: 26.8 percent), and “Electricity & Water” (weight: 0.5 percent).

The PPI of September, 2019 for the Mining sector showed an increase by 1.1 percent when compared with PPI of August 2019, primarily due to the increase of “Crude petroleum and natural gas” prices by 1.1 percent. PPI of September2019, when compared with its counterpart in previous year (September 2018), there has been a decrease of 18.0 percent.

A decrease of 0.4 percent has been recorded in September 2019, when compared with the previous month’s Manufacturing index (August,2019). The prices decrease are seen in: “Rubber and Plastics products” by 2.5 percent, followed “Basic Metals” by 2.4 percent, “Paper and Paper products “ by 0.5 percent, “Basic Chemicals” by 0.4 percent, and “Refined Petroleum products” by 0.1 percent. However, the increasing prices are noticed in: “Cement and Other non-metallic products” by 0.4 percent, “Grain mill and Other products” by 0.1 percent. No changes noticed in: “Juices”, “Dairy products”, “Beverages”, “Other chemical products and fibers”.

Comparing with the index of counterpart in the previous year (September 2018), “Manufacturing” PPI of September 2019 showed a decrease of 6.9 percent. The major groups which explain this price fall are: “Refined Petroleum products” by 19.9 percent, “Basic chemicals” by 14.1 percent, “Basic Metals” by 10.1 percent, and “Cement and Other non-metallic products” 3.4 percent. However, prices increased in “Rubber and Plastics products” by 4.3 percent, followed by “Other chemical products and fibers” by 3.8 percent, “Juices” by 2.2 percent, “Dairy products” and “Paper and Paper Products” by 1.6 percent each, “Beverages” by 0.7 percent, and “Grain mill and Other products” by 0.4 percent.
