Doha: Qatar Chess Association (QCA) will host a chess championship for children in the age group of 6-14 years at the Crowne Plaza Hotel from October 24 to 26, it was announced here yesterday.
Qatargas is the title sponsor of the three-day championship it was announced at a press conference held at the Qatargas Doha Head Office which was jointly addressed by Mansour Rashid Al Naimi, Public Relations Manager, Qatargas and Khalifa Mohammed Al Hitmi, President of QCA and Vice President of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).
Commenting on Qatargas’ support for the championship, Al Naimi said chess is gaining in popularity in Qatar.
“Qatargas is pleased to support Qatar Chess Association in organising this tournament which is aimed at bringing together a large number of young chess enthusiasts in Qatar. Our support for the game of chess forms part of a strategy we adopted in developing a group of sports activities that are fast gaining popularity in Qatar. This strategy aims primarily at introducing young talent available at the grass roots level and nurturing them in the best possible manner, thereby contributing to achieving the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030,” Al Naimi said.
Al Hitmi, President of QCA praised Qatargas for supporting the tournament.
“We thank Qatargas for its commendable support for this championship which will help promote the game of chess in Qatar. Chess, as we all know, has such benefits as developing mental skills of children and is directly linked to their education. This noble gesture from Qatargas manifests the Company’s deep commitment to the local community and its keenness in developing a generation with high mental capabilities,” the QCA president said.
Elaborating on the details of the tournament, Al Hitmi said that the championship will start at on October 24 at 5.00pm and will conclude on October 26 at 8pm.
Registration of players will begin at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on October 24 from 4 pm onwards.
Attractive prizes are being offered to winners and participants, informed the QCA President.
