The overall monthly Index Producer Price Index (PPI) of Qatar’s industrial sector for June 2021 was estimated at 71.3 points, showing an increase of 8.5 percent when compared to the PPI of the previous month (May 2021).
When compared on year-on-year [Y-o-Y] basis, the PPI of June 2021 showed an increase of 93.8 percent against PPI of the corresponding month last year (June,2020), official data released by the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) showed Producer price index covers goods relating to “Mining” (weight: 72.7 percent), “Manufacturing” (weight: 26.8 percent), and “Electricity & Water” (weight: 0.5 percent).
The mining sector PPI of June 2021 for this sector showed an increase by 9.9 percent when compared with PPI of May 2021, primarily due to the price increase of “Crude petroleum and natural gas” by 9.7 percent, while “Stone, Sand and Clay” decreased by 0.8 percent. PPI of June 2021, when compared with its counterpart in previous year (June 2020), there was an increase of 119.5 percent.
In the manufacturing sector an increase of 6.1 percent has been recorded in June 2021, when compared with the previous month’s Manufacturing index (May 2021). The prices increase is seen in: “Basic Chemicals” by 10.2 percent, followed by, “Refined Petroleum products” by 6.0 percent, “Cement and Other non-metallic products” by 2.5 percent, “Dairy products” by 1.2 percent, “Basic Metals” by 1.1 percent, “Juices” by 0.8 percent, “Beverages” by 0.7 percent.
However, decreasing prices are noticed in “Grain mill and Other products” by 0.4 percent, “Rubber and Plastics products” by 0.3 percent. no change is noticed in “Paper and Paper products”, and “Other chemical products and fibers”.
When compared with the index of counterpart in the previous year (June 2020), “Manufacturing” PPI of June 2021 showed an increase of 58.4 percent.
The major groups which explain this price increase are: “Basic chemicals” by 88.5 percent, followed by “Refined Petroleum products” by 62.6 percent, “Basic Metals” by 33.0 percent, “Paper and Paper Products” by 15.3 percent, “Rubber and Plastics products” by 11.4 percent, “Juices” by 2.0 percent, “Other chemical products and fibers” by 1.8 percent, “Dairy products” by 0.5 percent, and “Beverages” by 0.3 percent.
However, prices decreased in “Cement and Other non-metallic products” by 6.6 percent, and “Grain mill and Other products” by 1.7 percent.
The PPI of Electricity and Water group showed an increase of 1.6 percent compared to June 2021, resulting from increase prices in “Water” by 4.3 percent, while “Electricity” prices decreased by 1.0 percent.
When compared the PPI of June 2021, to the PPI of June 2020 [Y-o-Y], showed an increase of 10.8 percent, affected by prices rise in “Water” by 13.3 percent, and “Electricity” by 8.2 percent.
