Washington: A new study found that regular strength training during midlife can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 42 percent.

The 19-year study tracked more than 143,000 adults in the United States and was conducted by researchers from several international institutions, including Zhejiang University School of Medicine, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Yonsei University.

Researchers found that adults who performed at least two hours of strength training per week had a 27 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes, while those who maintained the habit through midlife saw the risk fall by 42 percent.

The greatest benefit was observed among people who combined strength training with aerobic exercise and reduced sedentary activities.

The researchers recommended including strength training as part of diabetes prevention strategies.
