Doha: Qatar Mobility Innovations Center (QMIC), the first independent innovations center in the region with a focus on developing and deploying smart mobility systems and services, showcased its latest digital solutions at the International Traffic Safety Conference & Exhibition.

The QIMC’s participation at the three-day event, which concluded on November 27, was part of its “Roadmap to Zero” road safety strategy, which was initially launched in 2015.

Under the strategy, it intends to deliver several digital solutions and applications that tackle different causes of road accidents. These solutions are fully developed locally by QMIC and tailored to fill in the gaps currently present in the field of road safety in Qatar and beyond. If fully implemented, these solutions will contribute to achieving the target of having zero fatalities from road accidents in the future.

Dr Adnan Abu-Dayya, the Executive Director of QMIC, said, “We are extremely happy with the progress we made in realising many elements of our strategy. We look forward to collaborating with key national stakeholders to support the adoption and deployment of many of our digital solutions.

“Tackling road safety problems requires a comprehensive approach that includes technology solutions, government regulations, education and awareness, and proper road design. We are proud of the leading role we are playing in the technology solutions side.”

In particular, the strategy has five domains that tackle the key causes of accidents. QMIC has revealed solutions and initiatives that tackle each domain.

To provide users on Qatar’s roads with the latest info about road conditions and other location-based services, QMIC announced the launch of a new major update to its mobile platform — Wain — for iPhone users. A similar update will be available for Android in December. With its focus on Qatar in terms of services, content, and user experience, Wain is becoming the Companion for Users on Qatar’s roads and has been downloaded more than 250,000  times.

To tackle the issue of over-speeding and to enhance driver performance, QMIC showcased its leading connected fleet platform and services that will allow enterprises to closely monitor driving performance of their fleet and ensure drivers adhere to road safety policies and regulations. Field data showed that overspeeding incidents can be reduced by more than 65 per cent if such a solution is used.

To ensure the availability of necessary data and tools that facilitate road planning design, and help decision-makers access the impact of road projects on traffic congestion, QMIC has demonstrated the only local national traffic platform and mobility intelligence applications. This platform collects millions of data records from multiple sources in real time on a daily basis and translates this into insight and smart applications.

To mitigate the problem of distracted driving caused by using mobile phones, QMIC announced the availability of its new Salamtek Enterprise solution (globally called PhoneMatics).

This solution allows enterprises to control and monitor the phone usage of their drivers (while driving) and will automatically enforce phone usage policies set by the enterprise. It will also provide basic fleet tracking capabilities based on using the phone as a source of data instead of using a dedicated tracking hardware.
