The sixth joint meeting between permanent representatives of Arab states to the Arab League with the Political and Security Committee of the European Union was held yesterday in Brussels. The Qatari delegation was led by H E Saif bin Muqaddam Al Buainain, Qatar’s permanent representative to the Arab League.
A joint press statement issued on the meeting and distributed by the general secretariat of the Arab League said the meeting included a constructive discussion between both sides on the current regional obstacles facing the Arab and European regions. The meeting also focused on the peace process in the Middle East, Syria, Libya, Yemen and fighting terrorism as well as migration. Both sides have recognised the importance of exerting efforts to face the joint political, economical, social and security threats that jeopardise the stability of both regions.
Two sides welcomed strengthening the partnership as the appropriate regional response and confirmed the organising of an Arab-European summit as mentioned in the last ministerial Arab-European meeting that took place in Cairo, 2016. The statement pointed out to the importance of the Arab ambassadors in Brussels to strengthen the partnership and especially with regards to developing the tools for preventive diplomacy and to explore mechanisms for this purpose. The statement said since the start of the strategic dialogue between the Arab League and the EU last November, progress has been made in the development of Arab-European practical cooperation, particularly in the areas of conflict prevention, early warning, crisis management, humanitarian assistance, combating terrorism, transnational organized crime, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, arms control and migration.
