FIBA World Cup 2027 will be unforgettable: Al Buenain

Doha: The Secretary-General of Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain, who is also the Chairman of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 Bid Committee, confirmed that Qatar’s winning of host status of the tournament is an extension of the series of achievements achieved by the country in all fields.

Al Buenain also expressed his pride in hosting the tournament for the first time in Region.

In a statement on this occasion, the QOC Secretary-General promised to host an unforgettable tournament and create the best conditions and atmosphere for guests, teams and fans in the first edition in the region.

Al Buenain congratulated the wise leadership on the achievement, thanks to the efforts of everyone and the directives of QOC President H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani. 

Al Buenain also noted the great legacy that the country possesses after the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, as Qatar possesses a legacy of knowledge and human expertise, in addition to modern infrastructure, huge sports facilities, and an advanced transportation network, that give a good account of the county and the region, especially with Doha is about to organise a number of sporting events, most notably the World Judo Championships this month, the 2024 World Aquatics Championships, and the 2030 Asian Games. 

He added that the committee will work hard to ensure the FIBA World Cup plays a role in enhancing sustainable development, in accordance to the new strategy of the Qatar Olympic Committee 2023-2030, which is based on five main areas: sports excellence, sports legacy, sports sustainability, sports culture, and institutional excellence. 

For his part, President of Qatar Basketball Federation Mohammed Saad Al Mughaiseeb said that hosting the FIBA World Cup was a historic achievement in the history of Qatari basketball. 

FIBA President Hamane Niang meanwhile congratulated the Qatari Basketball Federation for winning the right to host the competition, saying that he looks forward to a special FIBA World Cup when Doha hosts it in 2027.

The 2027 tournament will be the third consecutive FIBA World Cup to be held in Asia, after the 2019 edition was held in China, while the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia will co-host the 2023 edition later this year.
