Doha: Nasser Al Attiyah won the Sonora Rally in the northern Mexico yesterday, as the Qatari ace driver regained the lead in the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC).
Partnering his French co-driver Mathieu Baumel, it was Al Attiyah’s second win of the year for Toyota Gazoo Racing after the Dakar Rally. In the fifth and final stage yesterday at the Sonora Rally, Al Attiyah finished second behind winner Yazeed Al Rajhi but it was enough for him to jump into the championship lead with 136 points.
Saudi’s Al Rajhi is second with 106 points, while previous leader Sebastien Loeb dropped to third with 101 points after the Frenchman was forced to retire from Stage 3 in Mexico.
