DOHA: Qatar Museums (QM) recently celebrated World Poetry Day by hosting a classical Arabic poetry evening at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA).

The event paid homage to the language of the Holy Quran, highlighting MIA’s commitment to safeguarding Islamic culture and reaffirming its position as an iconic cultural centre in the region.

For centuries, poetry has been an integral part of Arabic and Islamic culture, building bridges between people and emphasising their common human values and identities.

The event, which was open to the public, included poetry readings by some of Qatar’s top local poets including Mohammed Khalifa Al Attiyah, Abdelhamid Hashem Youssef, Ali Mirza Mahmoud, Khaled Ahmed Obaidan and Mohammed Ibrahim Al Sada.

Commenting on the occasion, MIA Deputy Director Learning & Outreach & Operations, Salem Abdulla Al Aswad said: “Arabic poetry is one of the earliest forms of Arabic literature and has always been used as a creative outlet for artists to express their opinions and make their voices heard. We are pleased to support a new generation of Qatari poets and nurture an environment where classical Arabic poetry can continue to thrive and touch new audiences.”
