Germany on course for Doha double

Doha: Germans kept themselves in the hunt for a Doha double as both the boys and girls team booked a place in today’s finals of the 24th ISF World Schools Handball Championships here yesterday.
Both the finals – boys and girls – will be all-European events.
In the boys final, Germany will meet Austria while in the girl’s section Hungary will seek to stop the rampaging Germans in their tracks.
The German girls team set the pace in the morning session yesterday by scripting a fighting 33-26 win over Brazil while the boys did not lag behind.
The Germans will meet Hungary in the title clash. Hungary edged yet another European team, Denmark 27-21 to make it to the final.
In the evening session, the German boys cheered by their girls edged past neighbours Poland 35-30 and set up a final clash with yet another neighbouring country Austria.
Austria easily accounted for Israel coasting to a comfortable 31-18 over Israel.
Earlier, in the play-off round, hosts Qatar defeated Serbia 24-23 in a nail biting thriller.
The nine-day championship which is organised by Qatar School Sports Association (QSSA), in technical collaboration with Qatar Handball Federation.
The championships is played at three venues in Doha, at the Ali bin Hamad Al Attiyah Stadium in Al Sadd, Aspire Dome and Qatar’s Women’s Sports Committee Hall
Over 20 countries are taking part in the event including Austria, France, Turkey, Germany, Poland, Croatia, Brazil, Israel, Hungary, Slovenia, Denmark, Romania, Morocco, Georgia, Romania, Czech Republic, Greece, Belgium, Bulgaria, Serbia and hosts Qatar.
The competition concludes today and the closing ceremony will be held tomorrow at the Ali bin Hamad Al Attiyah Stadium in Al Sadd.
