Eugene, United States--English Gardner clocked a 2015 world-leading 10.79sec on Friday -- and had to be satisfied with the third-fastest time in the women's 100m semi-finals at the US athletics championships.
Tori Bowie's 10.72 in the second semi-final was the fastest of the day, but run in a favorable wind of 3.2 meters per second, over the allowable limit.
She was followed home by Olympic silver medallist Carmelita Jeter in 10.76.
Gardner's time, run in a permissable wind of 1.5 meters per second, eclipsed the previous season best of 10.81 posted by Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Murielle Ahoure of Ivory Coast at the Prefontaine Classic on May 30 on the same Hayward Field track.
The semi-final show promised a scintillating final later Friday, with the finalists battling for a top-three finish to secure a berth for the World Championships in Beijing August 22-30.
