Doha: Qatar International Center for Conciliation and Arbitration (QICCA) Board Member for International Relations Sheikh Dr. Thani bin Ali Al Thani recently participated in a webinar titled “Women in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) - Inspiration and Empowerment”.
The virtual meeting was organised by the International Chamber of Commerce Young Arbitrators Forum (ICCYAF) which also operates in Qatar.
The event, which was attended by144 professionals from 34 countries, aimed at shedding light on the state of representation of women in ADR at present, existing programs and initiatives for recruitment and training to increase diversity in ADR, the career benefits for women pursuing ADR training, and how women can effectively establish themselves in the ADR arena.
In a statement, Sheikh Thani said that Qatari women have been able to prove their position in the society and participate positively in the economic boom witnessed by the state thanks to the great support of the wise leadership on the importance of the effective participation of women in all aspects of life.
He noted that the door is open for women to enter the field of arbitration and there are leading Qatari female lawyers who are highly qualified and of high quality.
QICCA is ready to provide support for Qatari female arbitrators through training and granting them the opportunity to participate in the arbitration cases that are settled by the centre, he added.
The all female panel of speakers included Claudia Salomon, the first female president of the ICC Arbitration Court who opened the event with a motivational speech. Other speakers also included Claudia El Hage, Founding & Managing Partner at Al Marri & El Hage Law Office, Doha; Samaa Haridi, Partner and Head of ME Practices at New York-based Hogan Lovells and Vice-President of ICC Arbitration court; and Amanda Lee, Consultant at Costigan King and International Arbitrator and Founder of Careers in Arbitration in London. While Saad Hegazy, ICC YAF Mea and Turkey Representative and Mena Regional Director at SCM Consultancy, served as the moderator.
The event also witnessed the attendance of Dania Fahs, Regional Director for Arbitration and ADR, Mena at ICC International Court of Arbitration, who also delivered the closing speech and introduced the new ICCYAF Representative Anthony Feghali.
ICC YAF is an interactive forum under the aegis of the International Chamber of Commerce for young arbitration practitioners of approximately 40 years and under. The Committee aims to strengthen ties among younger members of the international arbitration community, provide opportunities to meet and discuss current issues facing the international arbitration practice, and to build a rich international network via the organisation of educational and social events.
