Qatar’s Barshim wins Arab Athlete Award

Dubai: The Board of Trustees of Mohammed Bin Rashid Creative Sports Award has selected Qatar’s athlete Mutaz Barshim for the Arab Athlete Award, it was announced here yesterday.
Barshim’s selection for the award came after he won the silver medal in high jump at the World Athletics Championship this year in Moscow.
The Qatari, bronze medal winner at last year’s Olympic Games in London, also broke the high jump Asian record in the Diamond League competition in Eugene USA.
The Board of Trustees of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Creative Sports Award also announced the names of 16 winners of the fifth edition of the award which is dedicated to innovation in the sports field.
Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairperson of the General Women’s Union (GWU), Chairwoman of the UAE Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, was selected as the “Sports Personality of the Year in the UAE” in recognition of her contribution to the support of various sports at the local, Arab and international levels.
The winners list also included the President of the Asian Football Confederation, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa (Arab Sports Personality), Moroccan Nawal El-Moutawakel (Arab Sports Personality), President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach (International Sports Personality) in recognition of their roles in the development of the sports movement.
