DOHA: Qatar’s students team has achieved an impressive milestone at the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO 2025), hosted in Dubai, UAE, from July 5 to 14.

The prestigious global competition brought together some of the world’s most talented high school students in an inspiring and highly competitive environment.

Representing Qatar were four outstanding secondary school students including Youssef Mohamed Elshahat and Benjamin Allen Conde Donkey from Qatar International School; Salem Faisal Al-Marri from Doha Secondary School; and Moath Shareef from Ahmad Bin Hanbal Secondary School

The delegation’s efforts were rewarded with a bronze medal for Youssef Mohamed Elshahat, while Benjamin Allen Conde Donkey received an honorary certificate for his distinguished performance. These achievements highlight the remarkable growth in Qatar’s academic capabilities in specialized sciences and reflect the nation’s growing presence in international academic competitions.

The Olympiad featured participation from 90 countries, each fielding a team of four students who undertook rigorous theoretical and practical exams covering advanced areas of chemistry over several hours.

The Qatari team underwent a comprehensive training programme led by chemistry mentors from the Science Department at the Educational Guidance Directorate. Training sessions—both in-person and virtual—involved highly qualified local and international experts. Collaboration with leading academic institutions such as Qatar University and Hamad Bin Khalifa University (a member of Qatar Foundation) played a key role, especially in the hands-on lab components of the training.

This achievement reflects the Ministry of Education and Higher Education’s dedication to encouraging student participation in international scientific competitions and fostering a learning environment that promotes excellence. It also aligns with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to build a knowledge-based society and empower national talents for global leadership.
