Confounding doctors, a 40-year-old man in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh showed signs of movement after being declared dead and kept in a morgue freezer for over seven hours.

According to reports electrician, Sreekesh Kumar had been hit by a speeding motorbike and was announced dead on reaching the district hospital recently. He was shifted into the freezer for a post-mortem to be done the next day.

After seven hours, when his family identified the body and agreed to an autopsy, his sister-in-law noticed that he was showing signs of movement.

A video shared widely on social media showed the sister-in-law exclaiming, "He's not at all dead. How did this happen? Look, he wants to say something, he is breathing."

Media reports quoted the medical superintendent saying that this was the rarest of rare cases where the vital organs stop functioning temporarily without the person being dead.

A report in Times of India quoted an official saying that also aiding Kumar's luck was that there was a frequent disruption in the power supply which probably saved his life.

Kumar is now undergoing treatment at another health centre where his condition has improved.

The family has filed a complaint for negligence against the district hospital.
