DOHA: Referee Hyeok Lee from Korea has been officiating at boxing tournaments for the last 18 years.
And she has no plans to stop.
“I have been a referee for 18 years and I enjoy it a lot,” Lee said yesterday.
“I like my job and I will continue doing this,” she said quickly.
“I have been an international referee for seven years,” she added.
“I’ve always liked sports from the beginning. I used to work in the military and love for sports has been with me for as long as I can remember,” she said.
“I love to watch taekwondo. It is a very special sport in Korea,” Lee said.
“Obviously you can say that I like boxing a lot too (laughs). I get to travel a fair bit when I have to go officiate during boxing tournaments,” Lee said.
“I was in Azerbaijan recently and before that I travelled to Ukraine. Then there was an event in China,” Lee said.
When asked about her other pastimes away from boxing events, Lee said she has family to look after.
“I have two children who are in their 20s. Me and my husband, we follow sport when we get the time,” Lee said.
“My entire family likes sports. My children like badminton,” Lee said.
Lee, who is currently officiating at the Doha International Boxing Tournament, said she is ‘impressed’ with what she has seen on her maiden visit to Doha.
“This is a good place. This is my first time in Doha.
“It is a beautiful city with tall buildings. It has nice beaches which I like,” Lee said.
“I have enjoyed my stay,” she said.
“This is a great venue. It is one of the best we have seen,” Lee added. THE PENINSULA
