KATHMANDU: A female Indian climber and two sherpas are missing after being hit by an avalanche while climbing on Mount Kanchenjunga, her family and Nepalese officials said yesterday.
Chhanda Gayen and her three Nepalese guides successfully summitted Mount Kanchenjunga last Sunday before attempting to scale a lower peak on a different part of the world’s third-highest mountain on Tuesday. Gayen was on her way down from the 8,505-metre-high Yalung Kang peak on Tuesday evening when the avalanche struck at 5,500 metres, officials said.
After the accident, Na Tashi Sherpa, the only known survivor from Gayen’s team, alerted Seven Summits, the Nepalese expedition company handling her climb.
“Rescue operations so far have been unsuccessful. We will resume search on Friday,” said Pasang Sherpa Seven Summits.
33 hurt as HK ships collide
HONG KONG: Thirty-three people were injured when two boats collided late on Wednesday in Hong Kong, authorities said, the latest accident to hit the city’s busy waterways.
Authorities said the collision occurred just off the outlying island of Cheung Chau between a mainland Chinese vessel and a high speed ferry.
“A Macau ferry collided with a vessel from the mainland,” a government spokeswoman said.
“Thirty-one injured are at the pier and two with comparatively more serious injuries have been sent to a hospital in Cheung Chau,” she said of the incident which occurred around 11.00pm local time.
The Macau ferry later arrived at its terminal on Hong Kong Island, but added that the Chinese vessel, a cargo ship, was still at the scene.
