Doha: Florian de Joya of the Philippines won the Qatar Center Ranking Chess Championship which concluded in Doha yesterday. 

India’s Syed Abdel Qader finished runner-up while Egypt’s Mahmoud Younis secured third position in the three-day tournament. 

The competition, which was held according to the Swiss system of 5 rounds / half an hour + 30 seconds for each move, saw a total of 28 players competing for the title. 

Rayan Irfan was emerged as “best Qatari player of the tournament”.      

Qatar Chess Federation (QCF) President Muhammad Al Madhahka and QCF Secretary General Youssef Muhammad Al Mutawa attended the proceedings. 

“The objective to hold such events is to hone skills of our players. We are happy to see the rising standards among the players. Their participation in such tournaments is important,” said Al Madhahka. 

“Such competitions also help us in scouting out good talent that can represent the country at international stage,” he added.
