Meet to showcase Qatar’s foremost road safety

Over 30 traffic safety experts from different countries will participate in the two-day ‘International Traffic Safety Conference’ which will start on Monday at Sheraton Hotel Doha.

The aim of the conference is to support and promote the vision and objectives of the Qatar National Road Safety Strategy 2013-2022.

The two-day event is organised by the Ministry of Interior and Qatar University, with the participation of a large government institutions and private sector entities.

The event is being organised under the patronage of Prime Minister and Interior Minister
H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani.

“The conference brings about an opportunity for dialogue and discussion at a global level, around issues related to the present and future of road traffics safety,” Dr. Omar Al Ansari, Vice-President of Qatar University for academic affairs said.

He also said in a press conference held yesterday at Qatar University that the event provides an opportunity for all stakeholders of road traffic safety to exchange their view points and reach solutions on problems of road safety. “Our contribution comes from the scientific research angle and there is continuous research in traffic safety.”

The conference tackle a number of different topics such as traffic safety engineering, driving behaviour, youth and traffic safety, education and traffic safety, road users at risk, legal enforcement, traffic accident data, post-accident investigations, among others.

Brigadier Mohamad Al Malki, General-Secretary of the National Traffic Safety Committee, said: “The conference aims to introduce the advanced level reached by the State of Qatar in the field of engineering, design and road construction, meet international safety and security standards, and learn about the experiences and efforts of other countries in the field of road safety, and the latest technology of road engineering.”

He also stressed the importance of the conference in exchanging experiences and sharing with the rest of the world as a practical application of the Sustainable Development Plan 2030 adopted at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on 25 September 2015, to halve the number of road deaths and injuries by 2020.

Jean Todt, UN General Security Special Envoy for Road Safety and Global Road Safety Ambassador, will attend the conference.

Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Abdulmajeed Hamouda noted the participation of a large number of researchers and specialists in the field of transportation and traffic safety, as well as engineers from private and public institutions around the world.

He noted it is Qatar’s first time to host a conference like this, which raises Qatar’s international profile in the field of traffic safety. The conference will help prepare local institutions concerned with traffic issues in anticipation of Qatar receiving the worldwide event FIFA World Cup in 2022.
