Doha: The Qatar Media Corporation (QMC) has announced that it is working on Media Encyclopedia, a pioneering initiative aimed at documenting key media theories and concepts within a structured, scientific framework.
The project is envisioned as a foundational academic reference for media professionals, researchers, and institutions across the Arab world.
Mohammed Sulaan Al-Marri, the project lead, explained the strategic rationale behind the encyclopedia.
“This initiative stems from a deep commitment to knowledge empowerment in the Arab media field. There is a clear need for an accurate, comprehensive scientific reference, and this encyclopedia seeks to fill that gap,” said Al-Marri speaking in a Qatar TV programme yesterday.
He emphasised that the encyclopedia was developed with a robust plan based on academic research and methodological rigor, ensuring credibility and relevance.
“Given the dynamic nature of media, the project is designed to be a living reference — continuously updated to reflect the latest developments and emerging media terminology,” Al-Marri noted.
The Media Encyclopedia will be available in both print and digital formats.
An online platform will provide users with both readable and audio content, making it globally accessible and interactive.
This digital gateway, Al-Marri added, will allow researchers from around the world to engage with the content and contribute to its evolution.
A dedicated expert team oversees the encyclopedia’s content development, ensuring all terms, theories, and references go through rigorous academic validation.
“The team includes specialists in media studies and academic research,” Al-Marri confirmed.
“Every entry is carefully examined and refined to ensure the encyclopedia becomes a reliable academic and professional resource.”
The Media Encyclopedia covers four main areas: media terminology, theoretical concepts, global and Arab media institutions, and a historical overview of the evolution of media practices.
While the encyclopedia is rooted in the Arabic language and Arab identity, it remains open to valuable international experiences and successful global media models.
“Our goal is not to isolate the Arab media discourse, but to enrich it by integrating proven international frameworks that can enhance the encyclopedia’s value,” Al-Marri explained.
QMC also plans to partner with universities, academic institutions, and research centres in Qatar and internationally to ensure the encyclopedia’s credibility, expansion, and academic outreach.
“From its inception, this project has been about collaboration,” Al-Marri stated.
“We actively seek partnerships to ensure this encyclopedia is both scientifically sound and widely adopted in educational and professional circles.”
The Media Encyclopedia marks a major strategic step by Qatar Media Corporation toward enhancing the Arab media landscape.
By offering a comprehensive, scientifically grounded reference for media professionals and scholars, the project aims to strengthen knowledge infrastructure, contribute to academic excellence, and support the evolving needs of the media industry in the region and beyond.
