ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain will address the mandatory annual joint sitting of both houses of parliament on June 2.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (1) of the Article 54 read with clause (3) of Article 56 of the Constitution, the president has been pleased to summon both the houses together in Parliament House,” a notification issued yesterday by the media wing of the National Assembly yesterday said.
Article 56(3) read as “at the commencement of the first session after each general election to the National Assembly and at the commencement of the first session of each year the president shall address both houses assembled together and inform the Majlis-e-Shoora (parliament) of the causes of its summons.”
With the joint sitting will commence the second parliamentary year of the PML-N dominated National Assembly. The government intends to present the federal budget for 2014-15 during the following week, but not later than June 6, a government source said.
It will be first address by President Hussain, a PML-N loyalist from Karachi who got elected as the 12th head of the state in July last year and replaced former president Asif Ali Zardari in September.
Zardari had addressed parliament for a record six times.
