DOHA: Qatar’s second World Cup 2026 group stage game saw them fall to host nation Canada 6-0 at BC Place in Vancouver on Friday.
Qatar showed early promising signs when Homam Al Amin lobbed a well-weighted cross into the Canadian penalty box, but Edmilson’s follow-up effort ended up missing the net.
The Canadian team then began moving forward more and were able to open the scoring after Canada’s Cyle Larin nudged Abu Nada’s rebounded save into the net to give the Canadian team the lead.
Jonathan David added the second for Les Rouges with a volley from inside the area that Abu Nada had initially managed to reach with his fingertips.
Al Annabi were then reduced to 10 men in the 33rd minute after a foul by Homam Al-Amin on Tajon Buchanan.
Canada, with the extra-player advantage, found their way to Abu Nada’s net for the third time, with Jonathan David tapping the ball in to mark his second goal of the match. The first half ended 3-0 in favour of the Canadian side.
Qatar’s coach Julien Lopetegui introduced Sultan Albrake, Mohammed Manai and Ahmed Fathy into the game in place of Yusuf Abdurisag, Jassem Gaber and Edmilson Junior.
Assim Madibo was sent off in the 53rd minute of regular time for a foul committed against Ismael Kone, further reducing Al Annabi to nine men.
Nathan Saliba, who came on to replace the injured Ismael Kone, added the fourth for Canada from a direct free-kick.
The 75th minute saw Mohammed Manai deflect the ball into his own net after trying to clear Jacob Shaffelburg’s volley off the line, giving Canada their fifth goal of the game.
Ahmed Fathy was then taken off by Lopetegui in the 87th minute to make way for Lucas Mendes.
With nine minutes added after the conclusion of the regular 90 minutes, Jonathan David marked his name on the scoresheet for a third time, scoring Canada’s sixth and the second hat-trick of the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far in the 90+2nd minute
