DOHA: The Doha Municipality closed down 32 food outlets over the past four months for violating the law, a senior official
has said.
Municipal inspectors raided 11,000 shops during the period and detected 768 violations, of which 23 were related to the food monitoring law. The remaining 745 cases involved violation of commercial rules, a local Arabic daily reported yesterday quoting Mohammed Ahmed Al Sayed, head of health monitoring unit at Doha Municipality.
He said the municipality is now planning to increase the number of inspectors, including women. It currently has 22 women inspectors.
The official said the municipality changes inspectors frequently to avoid complaints from outlets about bias.
“An inspector will not be deployed in one area for more than two months. We also keep video records as a proof of the violations to ensure that the inspectors act fairly,” said Al Sayed.
The inspection team took 346 food samples for laboratory tests during the four months, of which 21 were found not meeting the specifications.
