Doha: The Fifth Forum of Coordinators of the stakeholders of the National Traffic Safety Strategy (2018-2022) recommended yesterday to focus more attention on reducing accidents in the five geographic traffic areas that have more than 90 percent of deaths.
The forum recommended to emphasise the reduction of severe injuries rate to 15 per 100, 000 people by the year 2020, and to support the National Office for the implementation of the FIFA 2022 plan and ensure timely implementation of the stakeholders. It also emphasised on the implementation of pedestrian projects on time and lowering pedestrian mortality.
Brigadier Mohamed Al Malki, Secretary of the National Traffic Safety Committee, at the end of the sessions, declared the general recommendations issued by the forum. The two-day forum concluded yesterday at The Inter Continental Doha hotel. He said that the forum also recommended to enhance the role of the National Traffic Safety Committee as a leading institution in the state to develop policies, monitor implementation and strengthen Qatar’s global position and strengthening the road accident investigation system and building a modern national workforce.
It was stressed to accredit the traffic accident investigation team as a specialised body to support the efforts of the General Directorate of Traffic, in coordination with the National Bureau of Traffic Safety. The forum also recommended that the concerned parties should implement the work plan (more than 400) of their own and follow up the implementation process periodically. Experts recommended to develop the national traffic awareness system in coordination with the awareness and media work group and to adopt the concept of the global security system, which was revised to suit the requirements of the State of Qatar. They urged the National Traffic Safety Office to handle and complete the new electronic evaluation and follow-up system to support decision makers. They emphasised on the importance of implementing the UN sustainable development goals related to traffic safety, congestion and sustainable cities, and developing road and transport networks. The forum also recommended to put emphasis on the importance of transport sector plans and major events, especially related to World Cup 2022, and also development of geographic information system by concerned authorities in the country. The forum witnessed discussions on many topics by international experts.
Speaking at the forum, Antonio Avenoso, Executive Director of the European Transport Safety Council, presented a paper on “Traffic Safety Management in Europe”. He noted that the Transport Safety Council is an international organization of 60 members from Europe and other including experts, university professors, accident victims, researchers and others. The council has 27 members after the exit of Britain.
