Around 1,000 players from 54 countries are vying for 11 titles in the event which started yesterday.
A group of international stars including Wang Hao (China), Sinan Gugirov, Yevgeny Tomashevsky, Alexander Predik (Russia), Anton Korpov (Ukraine), Arjun Irigaysi (India) and Ray Robson (USA) are also competing in the event.
Mohammed Al Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Federation, stressed his great confidence in players participating in the tournament.
“We made good performances in the last international participation, which is the Olympics that was held in India, and we were able to win 4 matches out of 11 rounds. Therefore, if there is the same desire from the players participating in the Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival, we can achieve distinguished results,” he said.
