Doha: The 2020 Qatar Cup will be held in January, Qatar Stars League (QSL) announced yesterday.
The tournament which kicks off the new domestic season will see the top four clubs from the 2018-19 season in action.
Accordingly, top Al Sadd, Al Duhail, Al Sailiya and Al Rayyan will contest for the first title of the season.
The decision came after coordination of the concerned authorities to choose a suitable time for the tournament and after studying the calendar of the new season, it was decided to stage the event in January.
The decision has been made considering the busy schedule of the national team and that of the clubs who will also feature in the 2020 AFC Champions League.
The selection of the January date has been finalised to give the tournament more space in terms of marketing and promotion and to ensure coverage from the media in a distinctive manner.
The format of the tournament remains the same. The four sides will play the semi-finals and then the final.
