Minister of Municipality and Environment H E Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi said the Global Dryland Alliance (GDA) that was established yesterday at a founding conference held in Doha, came as a result to the global initiative launched by Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in a speech addressed at the 68th UN General Assembly on food security and climate change threats and the treatment of different issues related to providing and managing water, fighting desertification, increasing agricultural land and obtaining abundant food security.
On the sidelines of the conference, the Minister said such issues are rights to all humans, particularly in terms of giving priority to dryland nations and their access technology as a human right. Al Rumaihi said: “In the future, we call for the alliance play its role and comply to the UN and international organisations in order to find its appropriate place and to recognise those human rights, provide it and provide its resources either directly or indirectly.”
The Minister said that following the charters of the foundation, the founders will start meetings this year and next year to outline the alliance and the steps it will take in the future.
Al Rumaihi said the Qatar is one of the founding states and initiator and hoped for a strong relation between GDA and the Ministry of Municipality and Environment. His Excellency added that all members are equal, all bear the responsibility and contribute actively to its success.
