Qatar’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan yesterday withstood a fierce resistance by Alexander Huber and Christoph Dressler of Austria to reach the Round of 16 of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships.
The Tokyo bronze winners Cherif and Tijan, who are enjoying an unbeaten run at the World Championship in Rome, won the first set 21-15 before the Austrian pair fought back early in the following set.
With the score reading 14-8 at one stage in favour of the Austrians, the Qatari World No. 2 duo staged a brilliant comeback and won the set 24-22 to seal victory. Cherif and Tijan will meet Brazil’s Bruno Schmidt and Saymon Barbosa in their Round of 16 clash today.
