CPI inflation edges down in September

DOHA: Qatar’s inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for September edged down by 1.12 percent compared to the previous month; and slipped 0.38 percent on year-on-year.

On Month-on-Month, five main groups recorded a decrease. Recreation and culture (-6.61 percent), transport (-2.42 percent), housing, water, electricity and gas (-0.35 percent), restaurants and hotels (-0.15 percent); and furniture &household equipment(-0.04 percent).

An increase had shown on ‘Clothing and Footwear’ by 2.2 percent, ‘Food and Beverages’ by 0.88 percent, ‘Miscellaneous Goods and Services’ by 0.16 percent, The groups of ‘Tobacco’, ‘Health’ ‘Communication’, and ‘Education’ have remained flat at the last months price level.

This Y-o-Y price decrease is primarily due to the decreasing prices seen in the five groups, namely: Communication by 11.86 percent, Recreation and Culture by 4.59 percent, Housing, Water, Electricity and other Fuel by 2.9 percent, Food and Beverages by 2.53 percent, and Miscellaneous Goods and Services by 0.82 percent.

Also, there has been a an increase in price levels in six groups, namely: Transport by 6.13 percent, Education by 5.63 percent, Clothing and Footwear by 3.06 percent, Health by 2.88 percent, Furniture and Household Equipment by 2.07 percent, Restaurants and Hotels by 1.69 percent.

The CPI of September 2018, excluding “Housing, Water, Electricity and other Fuel” group, stands at 108.32 points, showing a decrease of 1.03% when compared to the index of August 2018, and an increase by 0.39% when compared to the CPI of September, 2017.
