Cherif, Tijan march into last-8 at home event

Qatar’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan marched into quarter-finals of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Katara Cup 2019 with a fighting 2-1 win over their Russian counterparts at the Katara Cultural Village Amphitheatre yesterday.

The Qatari world number-8 pair, Cherif and Tijan lost the first set against Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Oleg Stoyanovskiy 12-21 in the clash which took place last evening, but made a brilliant comeback in the next two sets (21-18, 15-8) to book a place in the last-eight.

The home duo had earlier defeated Brazil’s Alison Cerutti and Andre Loyola Stein 21-15, 21-19 in their first round match of the main draw yesterday.

Today, in the quarters, Cherif  and Tijan will meet Polish duo Michal Bryl and Grzegorz Fijalek who defeated Austrians Robin Seid and Philipp Waller 2-0 (21-19, 21-19) in yesterday’s final match at the popular tourist destination in Doha.

On Wednesday, the Asian Games and Asian champions Cherif  and Tijan cruised past Omani newcomers Nouh Al Jalbubi and Mazin Al Hashmi 21-13, 21-16 in their opening Pool A tie, but later suffered a three-set loss against Americans Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena.

The American duo also made it to the quarter-finals when they knocked out Dutchmen Steven Van De Velde and Christiaan Varenhorst in straight sets yesterday.

Dalhausser and Lucena set up a last-eight clash against Piotr Kantor and Bartosz Losiak of Poland who defeated Canada’s Sam Schachter and Sam Pedlow 2-0 (23-21, 21-14) yesterday.

The Katara Beach Cup is the fifth time that Qatar has hosted a World Tour tournament. The event concludes tomorrow.
