Wen strikes gold in men’s double trap as Asian Shooting Championships end

Baolu Wen of China won a shoot-out with compatriot Hao Wang to win double trap men’s individual gold at the 14th Asian Shooting Championships at the Losail Shooting Range.

Yesterday on the concluding day of the 10-day event, both Wen and Wang finished with an identical score of 140 and the tie had to be broken through a shoot out.

Hussein Rashid Al Shuhoumi of Oman took the bronze in the event.

Qatar’s Hamad Almarri finished with a score of 131 to finish in the ninth place followed by Masoud Al Athba with an aggregate score of 130 in the 10th spot.

In the men’s double trap team competition, China tallied 418 points to clinch the gold followed by Kuwait who picked up 389 points while Oman had to settle for the bronze. Qatar was unlucky to finish in the fourth place.

A total of 38 quota places for next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo were distributed during the Championships and went to 15 nations.

The most went to India who bagged six quotas while Japan and Thailand took five ahead of Iran with four.

The other 18 were split between a further 11 countries with hosts Qatar picking up one.

The continental championship was the last one for the Asian shooters to book their place for the quadrennial event in Tokyo.

In a first, 15 Indian shooters across multiple shooting disciplines have earned the quota for the Games, which are scheduled to be held next year from July 24 to August 9. These 15 includes all four available in air pistol and air rifle, across genders.

India has quotas in men’s and women’s 10m air rifle (Anjum Moudgil, Apurvi Chandela, Divyansh Singh Panwar, Deepak Kumar), women’s 25m air pistol (Rahi Sarnobat, Chinki Yadav) and men’s and women’s 10m air pistol (Saurabh Chaudhary, Abhishek Varma, Manu Bhaker, Yashaswini Deswal), men’s skeet (Angad Vir Singh Bajwa and Mairaj Ahmad), men’s and women’s 50m rifle three positions (Aishwarya Singh Tomar, Sanjeev Rajput, Tejaswini Sawant).

India have won four medals in total (one gold, two silver and one bronze) in shooting at the Olympic Games.
