H E Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari, Minister of Commerce and Industry; and Datuk Darell Leiking, Malaysia’s Minister of International Trade and Industry, have witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Qatar’s Investment Promotion Agency (IPA) and the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA). The signing ceremony took place on Thursday, October 10 on the sidelines of the second session of the Qatari-Malaysian Joint Trade Committee in Kuala Lumpur.
The MoU was signed by Sheikh Ali Bin Alwaleed Al Thani, CEO of the Qatar Investment Promotion Agency, and Dato Azman Mahmud, CEO of Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA).
The MoU aims to enhance mutual cooperation in generating investment crossflows between the two countries. The partnership includes information exchanges on economic and industrial development, as well as the organisation of joint promotional activities such as conferences and seminars that target investors.
Sheikh Ali bin Alwaleed Al Thani said: “The newly formed Investment Promotion Agency of Qatar looks forward to building on this agreement and enhancing cooperation and sharing of best practices. We believe that our strong relationship will enhance and support the expansion of both Malaysian and Qatari investments in our respective countries.” Minister Al Kuwari held a series of bilateral meetings within the framework of his visit to
Malaysia to participate in the second session of the Qatari-Malaysian Joint Trade Committee. He met with Dr. Wan Azizah binti Wan Ismail, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Women, Family and Community Development.
Discussions touched on the promotion of bilateral relations and the development of joint cooperation, particularly in the fields of trade, investment and industry in light of the friendly ties and strategic interests that Qatar and Malaysia share.
The Minister also met separately with Datuk Darell Leiking, Malaysia’s Minister of International Trade and Industry; Mohd Redzuan Yusof, Minister of Entrepreneur Development; Musa Hitam, Chairman of the World Islamic Economic Forum; Marzooqi Haji Yahya, Deputy Foreign Minister; and Dr. Mohammed Abdul Khalid, Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister of Malaysia.
The meetings focused on the latest developments that the Qatari economy witnessed over the past years and the investment opportunities that Qatar offers across various industries in addition to the incentives and legislations that Qatar enacted including the law on regulating the investment of non-Qatari capital in economic activity and the initiatives aimed at supporting the private sector, attracting foreign direct investment and encouraging Malaysian companies to tap the Qatari market.
Minister Al Kuwari, also held separate meetings with Tan Sri Desmond Lim, Chairman of Pavilion Bukit and Mohd Nazrul Izam bin Mansor, CEO of Felcra BHD.
The meetings touched on the prospects of joint cooperation in various fields, the investment incentives that Qatar’s economy offers and the initiatives launched by the State to support the private sector and attract foreign investments.
