Ajal lands Al Wukair Cup title with big win

Doha: Ali Bin Saeed Aljafali Al Nuaimi’s Ajal clinched Al Wukair Cup with a huge victory as Italian jockey Alberto Sanna enjoyed a successful run, sealing back-to-back wins at Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s Al Rayyan Park yesterday.   

There was no close competitor for Majed Mahadi Seifeddine-trained Ajal in yesterday’s feature race as the 4-year-old colt stormed to a massive 11-length win in the 1700m Handicap for Local Thoroughbreds. The winning side got richer by QR57,000.

Ajal’s closet rival was Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim-trained Al Faisaliya, helmed by Soufiane Saadi, taking QR 22,000 for the second place. Rider Tomas Lukasek guided Attaf to third position in the race to win QR 11,000. 

Abdulla Rashid Al Kubaisi presented trophies to the winners of Al Wukair Cup. 

Earlier, Sanna registered first of his two triumphs yesterday, riding Bint Saffian to victory in the Thoroughbred Handicap Class 4.   

Al Azraq Stable’s Bint Saffian – a 5-year-old mare recorded a 3¼-length in 1100m run, with Hamad Ahmed Al Malki Al Jehani-trained Zarandi (IRE), ending up as runner-up. Wayside Flower, with Marco Casamento in the saddle, finished third.  In Class 2 Thoroughbred Conditions, Zakhir Racing’s Daneyan emerged victorious with a 2-length win in the 1900m run. 

Ronan Thomas rode the Zuhair Mohsen-trained 5-year-old horse. High Commander and Topsy Turvy finished second and third respectively. 

Today, Doha Cup will be at stake in 10th Race Meeting of the season as eight more races are scheduled to be held at QREC’s Al Rayyan Park today. 

The feature race carries a total prize money of QR100,000.
