Doha: Fifth-seed Abdulla Al Tamimi moved into the quarter-finals of the QSF No.1, PSA World Tour Bronze tournament, on a day when two other seeded players Cameron Pilley of Australia and Chris Simpson of England fell by the wayside.
At the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, Qatar’s Tamimi took a minute less then a hour to win 11-9, 12-14, 11-8, 11-3 against Iker Pajares Bernabeu.
The World No.28 started with a flourish winning the first game but lost the second one but then bounced back to wrap up the proceedings in the third and fourth game.
In the fourth game, Bernabeu, who won the longest round one match, beating Auguste Dussourd in 80 minutes, seemed to run out of steam in the fourth, managing just three points.
Tamimi faces third-seed Daryl Selby in the last eight stage, in the pre-quarter-finals the World No.24 from England faced early trouble from 39-year-old Olli Tuominen of Finland but recovered in quick time to win 4-11, 11-3, 13-11, 11-7 in 53 minutes.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Ivan Yuen, defeated seventh-seed Simpson in straight games 11-6, 11-9, 11-9.
Yuen takes on another unseeded player George Parker of England in the quarters. Parker pulled off the second upset of the evening by defeating fourth-seed Pilley 17-15, 11-5, 11-7 in 42 minutes.
Both Simpson and Pilley had got a bye to the second round but failed to live up to their seedings.
On Saturday, two local players exit the competition with wildcards Hamad Al Hamri and Rashid Al Harib, both fell in respective straight games defeats to Egypt’s Mohamed Reda and England’s Joshua Masters, respectively.
Meanwhile, promising Malaysian youngster Eain Yow Ng, who created a flutter at last month’s Qatar Classic held at the same venue by defeating Tamimi could not repeat his giant killing act here yesterday. The former world junior champion went down to Joshua Masters of England in a five-game thriller which went on for 69 minutes.
Masters will take on top seed Egyptian Omar Mosaad who advanced with a 3-1 win over Christopher Binnie of Jamaica 11-3, 11-7, 7-11, 11-6 in 52 minutes.
The quarter-finals will be played today while the semi-finals will be staged tomorrow and final will be held on November 14.
