New York: The Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, at its seventy-second session, adopted, by consensus, the draft resolution on the “Follow-up to the Fourth World Conference on Women and full implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcome of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly.”
On behalf of the Chairman of the Third Committee, Third Secretary at the State of Qatar’s delegation to the United Nations Al Anoud Qasim Al Tamimi, as Vice-President, facilitated and led the negotiations of the Member States. The negotiations were characterised by flexibility and constructive participation in making proposals, which accelerated the consensus on the draft resolution.
In its resolution, the committee emphasized that the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcome of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly, entitled “Women 2000: gender equality, development and peace for the twenty-first century”, are important contributions to gender equality and the empowerment of women.
The Committee reaffirmed the commitments to gender equality and advancement, emphasizing that their full and effective implementation is an integral part of achieving the internationally agreed development goals, including the goals of sustainable development.
The Third Committee welcomed the progress made in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women, noting the challenges and obstacles to the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcome of the twenty-third special session. The draft resolution also stressed that the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action were a working guide for Member States and stakeholders.
The Committee reiterated that the full and effective implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcome of the twenty-third special session were essential to achieving the goals of sustainable development for 2030.
