Doha: Qatar is moving full steam ahead to develop the North Field expansion project, said Minister of State for Energy Affairs, President and CEO of QatarEnergy H E Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi.
“We are moving full steam ahead to develop the North Field by building state-of-the-art LNG trains that would take our leadership position further with a production capacity of 126 million tons per annum by 2027,” said Minister Al Kaabi, speaking during an event held yesterday to announce rebranding of Qatar Petroleum to QatarEnergy.
The new name better represented a broader strategy that included a focus on energy efficiency and environmentally-friendly technology such as capturing and storing carbon dioxide, he said.
Qatar, the world’s biggest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG), has embarked on an ambitious LNG capacity expansion plan. The two-phase North Field Expansion project will see Qatar LNG capacity increase from 77 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 126 mtpa by 2027, showing an increase of around 64 percent. The first phase of expansion will include expansion of LNG capacity from 77 mtpa to 110 mtpa by 2025 while the second phase will take LNG capacity to 126 mtpa by 2027.
Minister Al Kaabi said gas, which generates lower emissions than other fossil fuels such as oil and coal, would remain part of the global energy mix for years to come even as the world shifts to more renewable energy sources, Reuters reported.
