Baghdad: New Iraqi President Nizar Amidi officially assumed office today.
The Iraqi Presidency stated in a press release that President Amidi officially assumed his duties as President of the country during a presidential ceremony held at Baghdad Palace.
The statement added that following the official ceremony, the new President met with his predecessor, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, where the handover ceremony took place.
Amidi affirmed that the peaceful transfer of power is a fundamental pillar in consolidating the foundations of democracy and strengthening the stability of the state, praising the efforts made by President Rashid during his tenure.
The Iraqi Parliament elected Nizar Amidi, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) candidate, as the new President of Iraq yesterday, with 227 votes, making him the sixth President of the Republic of Iraq since 2003.
