Rugby: New Zealand’s Cama breaks 2,000 Sevens points mark

LONDON: Tomasi Cama returned to the New Zealand side at Twickenham yesterday and became only the second player in IRB World Series Sevens history to break the 2,000-point barrier.
Cama, who replaced the injured Joe Webber from the squad that won the Glasgow leg last weekend, is a member of an All Blacks Sevens side that need only to qualify out of Pool A in London, the final leg of this season’s series, to secure a 12th overall title, and they have started the tournament in customarily dominant fashion.
Gordon Tietjens’s team saw off Argentina 40-10 and Cama became only the second man, after England’s Ben Gollings, to pas 2,000 points at this level when he converted Akira Ioane’s second-half try in a routine victory.
Elsewhere in Pool A hosts England, who are looking to win the London leg for the first time since 1999, had to come from behind to see off Wales 14-10 with Tom Mitchell’s try the difference in the end.
In Pool B, Samoa have claimed two victories from two, having kicked off proceedings by beating the in-form Canada -- the losing finalists in Glasgow -- 19-12 and they followed that up with a win over Kenya by the same scoreline.
Fiji eye Sevens star Viriviri

SUVA, Fiji: Samisoni Viriviri, the leading try-scorer in this year’s IRB Rugby Sevens series, is in line for full Test honours after being named as one of only two new faces in a 39-man Fiji squad.
The squad, which includes 28 overseas-based players, will be whittled down to 30 before Fiji begin their defence of the Pacific Nations Cup next month and their World Cup qualifier against the Cook Islands.
“It’s a very strong squad with a good balance of experience and younger players,” newly appointed coach John McKee told the media yesterday.
“I have included a lot of Europe-based players because they are very experienced and they play week in week out, but I have not forgotten the local talent we have.” AGENCIES
