Doha: The Qatar Chess Association (QCA), in collaboration with AAB and QatarStreaming, will conduct the AAB (Abdullah Abdulghani & Bros) Open, an online open chess tournament for under-16 players, from March 26.
The tournament's finals (rapid chess by knockout system) will take place on April 1 and April 9, QCA announced yesterday.
“The tournament will be played over three consecutive Fridays in two exciting and competitive stages. A Live Stream session will be held during the finals. The winner will be determined during the last knock-out round at the iconic Lexus Building,” QCA said in a statement.
The qualifying stage will be played in 11 Rounds of Blitz Chess (5min + 3sec/move by Swiss System).
Top 24 players along with top eight Qatari players, a total of 32, will be able to make it to the finals.
The finals consist in a 32-player knock-out session. Every one-to-one match shall be played in 2 games of Rapid Chess by (10min + 5sec/move). In case of a draw score 1-1, players shall play up to the first win by (5min + 3sec/move).

The QCA statement also mentioned that there will be valuable prizes on offer for the top 16 players.
The champion will receive a cash prize of QR3,500, while the runner-up will get QR1,750. The semi-finalists will receive QR1,000 each whereas the quarter-finalists will be awarded QR500 each.
Round of 16 finishers will receive QR250 each. Those finishing from 10th to 16th shall also be awarded QR250 each, QCA said.
