Participants during their written test for muezzins.
Doha, Qatar: The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, represented by the Mosques Management Department, has conducted the first written test for muezzins for the year 2026, with the participation of 142 candidates.
The test comes as part of the ministry’s efforts to attract qualified muezzins who possess sound knowledge of the Islamic rulings related to the call to prayer, along with strong vocal abilities, in order to enhance the quality of the adhan in mosques across the country.
In this context, Ajyan Jaber Al-Ahbabi, Head of the Section for Imams, Preachers, and Sharia Ruqyah Practitioners, explained that the test reflects the ministry’s ongoing commitment to supplying new mosques with highly qualified muezzins who demonstrate both a solid understanding of Sharia rulings and appropriate vocal capabilities for performing the adhan.
He emphasised that the call to prayer is one of the greatest Islamic rituals, and that muezzins play a vital role in alerting Muslims to prayer times. This responsibility, he noted, requires a high level of trustworthiness and thorough knowledge of the Sharia rulings governing prayer times.
Al-Ahbabi added that the first phase of the assessment consists of a written test in jurisprudence fiqh and aqeedah, followed by an oral examination in the Holy Quran for candidates who successfully pass the written stage.
He further stressed that the Ministry is keen to achieve the highest standards in the performance of the adhan by recruiting highly competent muezzins. These tests represent an important step in meeting mosque needs with qualified personnel.
He affirmed that the ministry places great emphasis on the adhan through continuous training of muezzins and regular monitoring of their performance, ensuring that this important ritual is carried out in a manner befitting its significance.
The ministry conducts muezzin tests every three months to keep pace with the opening of new mosques and to fulfill their staffing requirements. It also confirms its ongoing commitment to developing evaluation and training mechanisms to ensure the availability of qualified cadres in all regions.
This initiative forms part of the ministry’s strategy to meet the needs of newly opened mosques and to recruit competent muezzins to serve mosques in various regions nationwide.
These efforts aim to elevate the standard of the adhan in mosques through an integrated system of testing and continuous training, contributing positively to the performance of religious rituals and strengthening the mosque’s role and message within the community.
