Safety of workforce and protection of assets and environment are key to the country’s safety programmes, H E Dr. Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada, Minister of Energy & Industry said.
Opening Qatar Process Safety Symposium (QPSS) hosted by ConocoPhillips and Texas A&M University at Qatar Dr Al Sada said: “Qatar recognises the fundamental importance of process safety in protecting people, the environment; organisations and their assets from the consequences of major incidents. The Qatar Process Safety Symposium is vital to this mission because it facilitates collaboration between academia, industry, and institutions to deepen our collective knowledge of process safety. Its impact cannot be understated.”
Top experts, decision makers, and industry practitioners gathered yesterday at the 8th annual Qatar Process Safety Symposium. At the event, experts engaged in substantive discussion on process safety, an issue of great importance not only to thousands who work in the oil and gas industry, but to the nationwide community in Qatar.
Also speaking during the QPSS plenary session were J. Todd Creeger, President of ConocoPhillips Qatar, Dr. César O. Malavé, Dean of Texas A&M at Qatar, and Steinar Vaage, Senior Vice President, Global Operations, Wells & Projects, ConocoPhillips. The session was chaired by Dr. Luc Vechot, Managing Director of the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center – Qatar (MKOPSC-Qatar) at Texas A&M at Qatar and Chair of the QPSS organizing committee.  “Human capital is our most valuable resource, and their safety is paramount in everything we do. Therefore, when it comes to process safety, ConocoPhillips and our partners in Qatar refuse to accept the notion of ‘good enough,’” said Creeger. “Process safety is not achieved by accident — it requires vigilance, constant analysis, rigor, and commitment. Through the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Center, named in memory of a devoted ConocoPhillips employee, and the Qatar Process Safety Symposium, we can advance our shared understanding of this essential subject.”
On the Symposium’s first day, attendees gathered to discuss challenges in process safety management, cutting edge research, and new technologies relevant to the process safety field. In tomorrow’s interactive sessions, participants will share best practices across organizations and review and discuss case studies of process safety incidents from around the world since the last QPSS event.
Texas A&M at Qatar students took an active role in the in-depth analysis of incident case studies at the event.
